Plymouth . How to Remove Chevy Saddle TanksChevrolet's heavy-duty trucks use saddle tanks that are visible from the side of the truck. These tanks are also equipped on the GMC equivalant, the GMC Topkick. These tanks are made for either diesel or unleaded gas, depending on the truck and the motor installed. These tanks are easy to access and it should only take 30 minutes to completely remove them from the truck chassis. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Jack Socket wrench Socket set Flathead screwdriver Step by Step : 1 Place a jack underneath the fuel tank. Raise the jack until the jack touches the bottom of the fuel tank. Be sure the jack is centered on the fuel tank for stability. 2 Locate the two straps holding the tank in place. The straps are bolted from the top of the tanks to the frame. 3 Unbolt the straps with a socket wrench. The tank will loosen as the straps loosen. 4 Allow the fuel tank to settle on the jack. Jack up the fuel tank to remove the fuel lines and any electrical housing. 5 Take off the fuel lines by loosening the hose clamps with a flathead screwdriver. Unclip any wires if attached. They will be held together by a quick-connect fitting. Separate the tabs to pull the wiring apart. 6 Lower the fuel tank. You may need a cart or hand truck to push the tank out of the way. Tips & Warnings The only way to take the fuel out of the tank is to syphon it out. You can do this with a rubber hose. Suction the fuel into the hose and allow it to drain into a pan or approved gas can. Use extreme caution when working around the fuel system. The fuel is highly flammable and should be handled away from open flames.
Plymouth . How to Remove Rocker Panels From a Chevy TruckWhen a Chevy truck ages and is exposed to adverse road conditions for years or maybe decades, the rocker panels take a lot of abuse. Salt can get in between the panels, which forms rust over time. Eventually the panels need to be replaced. This is a complicated process involving cutting, welding and shaping sheet metal, so it's not for the novice car builder. Before you replace the panels, however, you must remove the old ones. Difficulty:Moderately Challenging Instructions Things You'll Need Permanent marker Replacement rocker panel Drill Spot weld cutting bits Air compressor with air line Safety glasses Hearing protection Gloves Pneumatic angle grinder with cut-off wheel Step by Step : 1 Inspect the rocker panel needing replacement. Determine how much of the rocker panel you want to replace; this depends on the condition of the original rocker. Use the entire replacement piece, or just a small section. If you want to cut down the replacement piece, use the angle grinder with the cut-off wheel to cut it to size. 2 Hold the replacement panel over the rocker where you want to cut it, and mark the perimeter of the replacement panel using the permanent marker. Pull off the replacement panel and verify the location is correct. 3 Put on the safety goggles, gloves and hearing protection. Attach the angle grinder with the cut-off wheel to the air compressor through the air line, and cut inside of the permanent marker lines on the stock rocker. 4 Hold the replacement rocker in the hole and verify fitment. If it doesn't fit, trim the hole to size using the angle grinder until there is approximately a 1/16-inch gap between the replacement panel and the stock rocker. Tips & Warnings Always make sure that you cut the hole in the stock panel smaller than the replacement panel, and then use the grinder to trim to size. It's always best to cut smaller than larger, otherwise you could have to fill in more metal than you want to. *This part begins with a simple overview of how a standard internal combustion engine works and how various systems work together to get a vehicle started, keep it running, and bring it to a stop. Subsequent chapters provide a closer look at each system — electrical, fuel, cooling, transmission, and so on — on a part-by-part basis. You'll be relieved to know that I explain everything in everyday terms, with no jargon, no unnecessary technical details, and lots of simple illustrations. If alternatively fueled vehicles strike your fancy, you'll find information on how diesel, electric, fuel cell, hybrid, and other innovative engines work, and the advantages and disadvantages of each kind. Because the key to doing any job is to understand what you're working on and how it functions, I strongly recommend that you read the chapter in this part that deals with the system you want to work on before you head for the chapter that tells you how to do the specific job. Part III: Keeping \lour Car in GoodCondition, System by System Here, you can find out how to perform regular maintenance on your vehicle: change the oil and coolant, do basic tune-ups, check the tires, maintain the brakes, and more. By following the detailed instructions in this part, you can keep your vehicle running longer and more efficiently and lessen the likelihood of major problems that could send it to "The Great Used-Car Lot in the Sky." Auto Repair For Dummies Part IV: Dealing With On~the*RoadEmergencies This part helps you deal with problems that may occur while you're away from home. It shows you how to decipher such symptoms as weird noises, smoke, smells, and leaks to determine what's wrong (we call this troubleshooting in Carspeak) and what to do if your car drops dead on the road. If it's safe and fun to do the work yourself, I tell you how to do it. If the job is just too hairy to deal with yourself, I tell what to look for so that, when you do talk to a mechanic, you can describe the problem in the terms the mechanic needs to hear and evaluate whether the service you're getting is good, poor, or even necessary. This part also tells you how to find a good mechanic, decipher a mechanic's invoice, and get satisfaction on complaints if, despite your best efforts, you run into problems with anything you buy. Part V: Helping \lour Vehicle Look Its Best Because keeping a vehicle clean — inside and out — can extend its life and value, in this part I cover washing, waxing, and removing stains from the body and all the interior surfaces, plus how to repair the small dings, dents, and rust spots that cost big bucks at body shops. Part VI: The Part of Tens 93

Glossary If you're unfamiliar with the jargon, automotive terms can sound like pig Latin — familiar but nonsensical. That's why I've provided a practical glossary that tells you what something is and gives you advice about it as well. Throughout the book, glossary terms are set in a special font to remind you to go to the glossary when you see a word that you don't recognize or a term that you don't understand. Introduction Special features To be sure that you can find whatever you need easily, there's an extra large index, so you can look for a part, system, symptom, or problem when you return to this book for instructions. If you're not sure what to look for, try general terms like "How to" and "Troubleshooting." There's also a Maintenance Record to remind you to get busy if you've let things go too long, and a handy Specifications Record so that you have the numbers of the parts you need when you go to the auto supply store.
